3) What is the calling cost for calls within the mobiVoIP community?

Calling within mobiVoIP community is Free!

4) What are the minimum requirements to use mobiVoIP?

Palm device with OS Version 5.0 or greater is required.

mobiVoIP is tested to be compatible with Palm TreoTM 650, TungstenTM, LifeDriveTM and ZireTM

5) What are the bandwidth requirements to use mobiVoIP?

A minimum of 60kbps is required for using mobiVoIP over narrowband with GSM codec, while 160kbps is required for wideband connections to use G.711 codec. Data connection speed for your device can be known by taking a speed test from http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed

6) What is a Codec and which codec does mobiVoIP support?

Codec stands for Coder/Decoder – a technique to compress your voice and make it compatible for transmission over internet. G.711 and GSM are the supported codecs.
GSM is recommended for narrowband connections requiring minimum of 60kbps bandwidth to get business quality audio whereas G.711 is recommended for wideband connection with 160kbps bandwidth to get a near PSTN quality voice service.

top7) Can I use mobiVoIP to call a land line number?

Yes, you can call land line telephones using mobiVoIP. In order to make a call to land line number, you are required to purchase a calling plan.

8) How to get an account for using mobiVoIP?

You can signup for a calling plan that suits your need from our online store.

top9) Can I make calls to International numbers?

Yes, with Premium International calling plan; you can calls most of the countries in Europe and Australia. Please check the calling rates for international calls from our online store.

top10) Which countries are supported by mobiVoIP?

With Premium International calling plan; you can call North America, most of the countries in Europe, some countries in Asia and Australia. Please check the calling rates for international calls from our online store. 11) How about calling to countries not listed in the list?

We aim to support including all the countries to our list of supported countries as we go along. However, if you want a country’s inclusion to be done with preference, please write to our support department.

12) mobiVoIP shows ‘Connecting to Server’ and does not proceed to “Ready to make calls”. What should I do?

Try disabling “Resolve IP using STUN” option from mobiVoIP preferences to allow mobiVoIP to use local IP settings. If you still continue to face the same problem, consult your network administrator to enable ports 5060-5080 and 16506-16526 for UDP transmission.

If this troubleshooting does not help, then it may be possible that your ISP is blocking VoIP data transfer. You can confirm this by running other desktop VoIP clients over the same connection to check if they are able to connect.

13) I use a TreoTM 600 and GSM codec but the call quality is very poor – why is this?

TreoTM 600 has 144 MHz processor. mobiVoIP recommends a minimum of 200 MHz processor for effective usage of GSM codec. However, if you have a bandwidth of 160kbps you can use mobiVoIP on TreoTM 600 with G.711 codec.

top14) Why do I get a “Low QOS” message?

The “Low QoS” message in the status bar is displayed when the data packets are received out of sequence due to network problems. mobiVoIP will adjust for small sequence errors to correct the error and give better performance in these situations.

15) Why do I see a ‘Packet Loss’ message?

Internet data connection speed is the common reason for this error. Please make sure that your device has the minimum data speeds required by mobiVoIP.

16) I am able to hear the other end during the call but the caller reports that he cannot hear me?

Check if your router is blocking outgoing VoIP packets. The router settings should allow communication on ports 5060-5080 and 16506-16526 for UDP transmission.

top17) Why is WiFi preferable over Bluetooth for mobiVoIP usage?

WiFi offers higher data transmission rate and QoS (Quality of Service) compared to Bluetooth resulting in better calling experience with mobiVoIP.

Users can use codec G711 and GSM over WiFi, while only GSM codec will give business class call quality with Bluetooth connection.

18) I am a Tungsten T3 user. When I use G711 codec over Bluetooth – the voice quality is poor, how can I improve the voice quality?

Bluetooth generally offers lower data transmission rates. So it is recommended to use GSM codec to get business class call quality.

19) I have a Tungsten T3 and PalmOne WiFi SD card, mobiVoIP crashes randomly during call, why is that? Is there any fix for this?

palmOne WiFi SD card and T3 combination have a problem with connection libraries for data transmissions over 13.2 kbps. There is no fix available for this problem from palmOne at this time.

However, it is recommended to use T3 device with Bluetooth connection and GSM codec for business class voice quality.

top20) I get echo problem with LifeDrive and T3, how can I avoid it?

Palm devices come with a very sensitive microphone which pickup the speaker output that is transmitted with original voice thereby creating echo. To avoid this problem, head set usage is recommended during mobiVoIP calls

21) What is STUN? Why should I use it?

Simple UDP Traversal over NAT (STUN) will detect and use the external IP of the device by contacting external servers 1 and 2. mobiVoIP comes with a default STUN server configuration.

You may configure these servers manually, if the application takes more time to detect IP settings for your current location. The default setting for mobiVoIP is ‘Resolve IP using STUN’ enabled.

*Note – the farther you are from the servers, the longer it may take to resolve the IP.

Warning:It is not recommended to change these settings without fully understanding the details about STUN. Lists of STUN servers available for use are available from here.

22) I have problems using the “Resolve IP using STUN” setting but mobiVoIP works fine if I disable it and use local IP settings, Why is it?

All the routers do not support this feature. Improper detection of settings may cause problems with calls. In such cases, the user should disable the IP resolution using STUN by un-checking the option “Resolve IP using STUN”. This will allow mobiVoIP to detect and use local IP for data communication – the IP detected is displayed as local IP. You can select “Dynamic” to allow mobiVoIP to automatically detect the IP setting for you every time. If you feel that the detected IP is different, you can edit it by disabling the “Dynamic” option and entering the IP manually.

23) Since I have a large ping time with the default servers 1 and 2, what are the different STUN servers that I can connect to?

There are many open STUN servers available that you can configure your STUN server settings to connect to one of them that you get minimum ping time.

  • stun.fwd.org:3478
  • stun01.sipphone.com:3478

top24) When should I use the Noise suppression?

If you have a narrowband connection with bandwidth less than 60kbps, you may have problems with the reception quality. In such situations, enabling noise suppression will save your bandwidth and increase the voice quality.

25) How to calibrate and use Noise suppression?

Audio Configuration is a setting that allows a user to save bandwidth by utilizing noise suppression or Voice Activity Detection (VAD). With this setting enabled, mobiVoIP will send data only when there is voice activity on your end. To use this setting, you are required to calibrate mobiVoIP with the environment noise level measured in DB.

Enable “Noise Suppression” option after calibrating the threshold level to begin using this setting during a call.

“Calibrate” button will perform a noise level calibration test. During this test, user is expected to remain silent so that mobiVoIP can determine the environment noise level and calculate the threshold value.

top26) Where can I get the user manual for mobiVoIP?

You can download the user manual in PDF format from here

27) How can I know if I am using the latest version of mobivoip and how can I perform an upgrade, if needed?

mobiVoIP can receive upgrades via OTA (Over the Air). Select the upgrade option in the application menu to check if any new versions are available for download. If a new version is available, mobiVoIP receives the upgrade over the air and automatically installs it on your device.
